By Borja Bes — CrossFit Athlete & Hyrox Finisher
Banded Pull-Up is an assisted vertical pull that reduces the hardest part of a pull-up while preserving the bar path. Equipment: Resistance band, Pull-up bar. To establish a repeatable position, secure an intact band around the bar, place a foot or knee in it carefully, and begin from an active hang. From there, pull the chest toward the bar with the elbows driving down, then descend to full control before the next rep. The movement belongs in deliberate strength, accessory, or compatible conditioning work rather than being added randomly for novelty. Inspect the band, keep the face away while entering and exiting, and never use a damaged loop. Select resistance that preserves the intended pattern from the first repetition to the last.
Quick answer
Banded Pull-Up is an assisted vertical pull that reduces the hardest part of a pull-up while preserving the bar path. Use repeatable sets of Banded Pull-Up and scale before breathing speed causes range of motion or control to disappear.

Equipment
| Best for | Banded Pull-Up conditioning when the goal is repeatable output through latissimus dorsi and biceps, with a version that matches the athlete's current capacity. |
|---|---|
| Avoid if | Avoid or scale Banded Pull-Up if pain changes the movement or the intended position cannot be controlled. Correct this common fault before adding volume: skipping the setup details: secure an intact band around the bar, place a foot or knee in it carefully, and begin from an active hang. |
| Scaling | Use a thicker band or combine the rep with a controlled box step. |
Prepare the equipment and space: secure an intact band around the bar, place a foot or knee in it carefully, and begin from an active hang.
Brace before creating tension and confirm that the working joints feel comfortable.
Perform the repetition: pull the chest toward the bar with the elbows driving down, then descend to full control before the next rep.
Pause briefly in the strongest position instead of using momentum to rush through it.
Return under control, reset balance and tension, then begin the next repetition.
Skipping the setup details: secure an intact band around the bar, place a foot or knee in it carefully, and begin from an active hang.
Using more resistance than can be controlled through the complete range.
Turning a strength or accessory movement into a rushed conditioning repetition.
Ignoring the main safety boundary: Inspect the band, keep the face away while entering and exiting, and never use a damaged loop.
Focus on this action: pull the chest toward the bar with the elbows driving down, then descend to full control before the next rep.
Use a smooth return; the eccentric phase should look as organised as the working phase.
End the set when posture, joint alignment, or anchor stability changes.
Progress tension or load only after every repetition follows the same path.
Easier / Beginner
Use a thicker band or combine the rep with a controlled box step.
Harder / Advanced
Use a thinner band, add a slow negative, or progress to strict pull-ups.

Banded Pull-Up works best when its movement pattern and setup match the session. Use it for controlled strength, accessory, or specifically compatible conditioning work, not simply to increase exercise count.
Use a thicker band or combine the rep with a controlled box step. Once every repetition is stable, progress with this option: Use a thinner band, add a slow negative, or progress to strict pull-ups.
Inspect the band, keep the face away while entering and exiting, and never use a damaged loop.
