By Borja Bes — CrossFit Athlete & Hyrox Finisher
Band Row is a horizontal pull that builds upper-back strength when dumbbells, cables, or rings are unavailable. Equipment: Resistance band, Secure anchor. To establish a repeatable position, anchor the band near sternum height and step back until there is light tension with the arms straight. From there, drive the elbows behind the ribs, pause with the shoulder blades together, and return without letting the band pull the torso forward. The movement belongs in deliberate strength, accessory, or compatible conditioning work rather than being added randomly for novelty. The anchor must be rated and secure; stop if the band is damaged or the attachment shifts. Select resistance that preserves the intended pattern from the first repetition to the last.
Quick answer
Band Row is a horizontal pull that builds upper-back strength when dumbbells, cables, or rings are unavailable. Use repeatable sets of Band Row and scale before breathing speed causes range of motion or control to disappear.

| Avoid if | Avoid or scale Band Row if pain changes the movement or the intended position cannot be controlled. Correct this common fault before adding volume: skipping the setup details: anchor the band near sternum height and step back until there is light tension with the arms straight. |
| Scaling | Use a lighter band or stand closer to the anchor. |
Prepare the equipment and space: anchor the band near sternum height and step back until there is light tension with the arms straight.
Brace before creating tension and confirm that the working joints feel comfortable.
Perform the repetition: drive the elbows behind the ribs, pause with the shoulder blades together, and return without letting the band pull the torso forward.
Pause briefly in the strongest position instead of using momentum to rush through it.
Return under control, reset balance and tension, then begin the next repetition.
Skipping the setup details: anchor the band near sternum height and step back until there is light tension with the arms straight.
Using more resistance than can be controlled through the complete range.
Turning a strength or accessory movement into a rushed conditioning repetition.
Ignoring the main safety boundary: The anchor must be rated and secure; stop if the band is damaged or the attachment shifts.
Focus on this action: drive the elbows behind the ribs, pause with the shoulder blades together, and return without letting the band pull the torso forward.
Use a smooth return; the eccentric phase should look as organised as the working phase.
End the set when posture, joint alignment, or anchor stability changes.
Progress tension or load only after every repetition follows the same path.
Easier / Beginner
Use a lighter band or stand closer to the anchor.
Harder / Advanced
Use a heavier band, a two-second squeeze, or a split stance with more pre-tension.

Band Row works best when its movement pattern and setup match the session. Use it for controlled strength, accessory, or specifically compatible conditioning work, not simply to increase exercise count.
Use a lighter band or stand closer to the anchor. Once every repetition is stable, progress with this option: Use a heavier band, a two-second squeeze, or a split stance with more pre-tension.
The anchor must be rated and secure; stop if the band is damaged or the attachment shifts.
